Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

There’s only one word to describe this anime series. Epic.

The story centers around Simon, a digger in the underground village Jeeha. He lost his parents so he’s an orphan. His friend is Kamina, a charismatic, headfirst, brave guy. Kamina dreams of breaking out to the surface where humans should be. Simon finds a small drill bit while digging. Soon afterwards he gets wrapped in Kamina’s plan to get to the surface. That fails but the surface comes to them when Yoko fighting a mech called a ganmen. Later they find new allies in villages and on the road to fight against the beastmen and the Helix King that keeping the man down.

The second story arc deals with finding the capitol of the beastmen and fighting higher enemies. Also there’s a major addition to the cast with Nia the former princess of beastmen. It focuses on the final war with the enemy and Simon coming to terms with a sad event.

The third story arc is a time skip. It’s setting in 7 years after the last war and has a new enemy called the anti spirals. At first it starts out not as good as the original set up but proves to be just as epic in the series finale.

The animation has vibrant colors and great character designs. Each episode is crafted well with the exception of episode 4. Seriously Gainax, what happened there? It reminds me of Dead Leaves and FLCL a lot. I also love the designs of the mecha and creatures. This anime stands out a lot in art alone from the majority of anime right now.

The characters draw you in with charisma and the dialogue is fitting. Although I have to admit this anime can get over the top and weird but it’s so damn manly when they do. “Your drill is a drill that will break through the heavens!” “Who the hell o you think I am!” “Believe in you, not in the me who believes in you; not in the you that believes in me. You should believe… believe in yourself!” All of those became followed quotes in the fandom. The story makes you think it’s going to be another teen mecha emo kid and crazy adventure situations like an RPG. It does BUT Simon is only emo for a good 2 episodes and its for a good reason. The whole RPG adventure element works in the first and second half. The last half gets kind of a sci fi Eva type thing going on.

In short WATCH THIS NOW! YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE NOT TO HAVE SEEN THIS! If you like mechs, adventure, action, comedy and a pinch of drama, go for it! This anime has multi appeal so even n00bs and hardcore fans can both love this series with pride.

Movie Review: Candy Candy the Movie

A baby was left on the doorstep of Poni Orphanage. The baby was Candice White, nicknamed Candy. She lived happily there with her best friend Annie until Annie was adopted. She remained there years after until Candy was adopted by a rich family to be a companion to the family daughter. Unfortunately the daughter and her brother treats Candy badly. Candy, fed up with this new life becomes sad and while crying she meets Anthony, a neighbor. Later on at a party with all the aristocrats she meet him again and reunited with Annie who cannot reveal she was an orphan thus cannot act like she knows Candy. Thing turn around when they finally talk privately and Candy gets to dance with Anthony.

The Candy Candy movie is a summary of part of the 115 episode 1976 TV series. The movie was made by Toei in 1992. Because of the fact that this is a compilation movie it goes really fast. The characters are introduced quickly and are one dimensional because of the movies 30 min. run time. It seems more like one third of a movie rather than a movie itself. Nonetheless you would love Candy’s happiness and how she overcomes her problems. She’s a charming cute girl anyone fan would fall for. Another reason why this movie should have gotten better treatment. It is a nice little story with a beginning, problem and solution but this should have been an OVA in my opinion. The animation looks dated but I feel it’s appropriate being that it’s based of an older series. The designs resemble the TV series and the voice acting is average to awesome.

This is a good short movie to watch and will make you wish for the series in America. Unfortunately you will only be able to find a bootleg or a download because this title doesn’t have an American release. If you like good ol’ fashioned shojo with a short story and don’t want anything deep then try this.

Haruhi: Flash Edition!?

If Haruhi Suzumiya was a flash series.I’m guessing this would be the outcome.
