The production notes for the recent horror films Shutter and The Strangers both reveal that America’s Vertigo Entertainment is developing a remake of the Death Note franchise and has hired Vlas and Charles Parlapanides to write the screenplay. In Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s hit Death Note manga, a teenager finds a notebook with which he can put people to death by writing their names. He begins a self-anointed crusade against the criminals of the world, and a cat-and-mouse game begins with the authorities and one idiosyncratic genius detective.

in an effort to develop new microcircuit technology, a university professor in tokyo instead creates the worlds smallest bowl of ramen.

It won’t fill you up, but it is a feast for the eyes (if you look through a microscope). This so-called “world’s smallest bowl of ramen” — a 1-micron (1/1000-mm, or 1/100th the width of a human hair) wide bowl containing dozens of 20-nanometer (1/50,000-mm) thick noodles — was created by University of Tokyo professor Masayuki Nakao as part of an effort to develop new carbon nanotube-based microcircuit fabrication technology. Nakao used a metal particle beam to carve the bowl from silicon, and he mixed up a soup of ethanol and catalyst inside the bowl to form the carbon nanotube “noodles.” According to Nakao, it was a major challenge to keep the bowl from overflowing. No word yet on how the tiny meal tastes.

“Slacks are slowly becoming part of schoolgirl uniforms throughout the country, with a Sapporo junior high school’s decision earlier this year to make them compulsory threatening to end the hegemony of the hem.

Slacks replaced skirts as girls’ compulsory garb at the Sapporo Municipal Minamigaoka Junior High School from spring this year, although pupils will be able to wear skirts for about three months over the summer period.

School officials say the main reason for making slacks compulsory is health, and that it’s common for pupils to go for what’s called the Haniwa Look — tracksuit pants worn underneath a very short skirt — during the colder months. Head teacher Minoru Sasaki said the school decided to make a formal change.”

I recently stumbled across a list that predicts (and predicted) the manga trends this 2008. It’s a very comprehensive list and most of them are indeed true for this year. Most because we still have 8 months to go before 2008 ends, so…

Without further ado, here are the trends:
1. Movies based on manga. Yep, we’ve been seeing these a lot with the list of manga being adapted into movies - and not only movies, but live-action series as well. Examples are Dragon Ball Z, Speed Racer, HanaKimi, Honey and Clover…the list goes on!

2. Return of the “dead” manga. Old and has-been manga titles are coming back this year as publishing companies re-publish them to return them to their glory days. Expect to see Slam Dunk, Crayon Shin-chan and Black Jack in your bookstores soon.

I didn’t really give much attention to Peach Girl at first but my curiosity got the better of me. It’s such a cute story that I kind of regret not reading it earlier!
